If I use a laptop and a desktop for my work, do I have to buy 2 MX02 units? That seems kind of strange for an external box. What is the difference in the hardware? Can I configure the same unit for laptop and desktop?

Hello and thank you for your interest in Matrox products. With regards to your question; you only need to purchase one MXO2 Mini for use with either your desktop or laptop (Please note however, that you can not have the MXO2 Mini connected with both laptop and desktop at the same time).

Each MXO2 Mini purchase comes with either:

- Matrox MXO2 PCIe x 1 host adapter (for use with Mac Pro and PC desktop) or;
- Matrox MXO2 PCIe host ExpressCard/34 adapter (for use with MacBook Pro and PC laptops)

You can always purchase additional host adapters separately, from any of our Matrox Authorized MXO2 Mini Dealers, worldwide.

Best regards,
B.C.

Is MAX internal to the box? Can regular MX02 Mini be converted to a MAX later?

The MXO2 Mini box can be moved between multiple machines, as long as each one has one of thte Matrox adapters installed. We offer a bundle of the Mini with both adapters (PCIe and laptop) for just $529

The MAX option is different hardware. You can't upgrade a mini to a mini w/ Max. If you do blu-ray or flash the MXO 2 Mini Max is the right prodcut for you. We offer it with both adapters as well for $929

Thanks Gary and just to add to this thread; The only time where you can add the Matrox MAX technology to a non MAX opted MXO2 or MXO2 Mini, at a later time, is if you purchase the Matrox CompressHD PCI-e card. This will provide you with the exact same functionalities you would have gotten if you opted for the MAX option with your initial MXO2 or MXO2 Mini purchase. Obviously, if you choose to add the CompressHD to your workflow, you would loose the portability factor (you would otherwise have with MXO2 or MXO2 Mini, with MAX) since it's a PCI-e card which requires a desktop to install on. (Please note that this card is also sold through videoguys.com)

Hope this helps, but if you have any other questions, please let us know...

Best regards,
B.C.
