Hi there,

I seem to be having a problem when trying to digitalise some old Hi8 tapes and i'm not sure what the issue could be.

Video source;
Sony CCD-TR2000E VCR through composite video with 2 channel audio (left & right)

I have tried capturing using all kinds of different settings, but without any success. The preview window in Final Cut 7 displays the video fine as long as it is not being captured, the audio can be monitored correctly as well. However when starting the recording, the video and audio will still preview while recording, which is normal, but eventually cuts to black with only the audio still being previewed.
After finishing the recording and playing back the video, the playback also cuts to black with only the audio still playing.

The time interval of cutting to black seems to be random, from a couple of seconds up to a couple of minutes.

This issue seems similar to the problem posted here, which never really got resolved;
http://forum.matrox.com/mxo/viewtopic.php?t=10308&highlight=pal+video+recording+black+screen

Any help is much appreciated!

Kind regards,
Alex S.

Hi Alex,

Please let us know the following to better help:

- first is the output from your Sony VCR to the MXO2's inputs direct or is there some other device in the middle?
- which operating system are your running with?
- which MXO2 driver is installed?
- have you tried with other tapes?
- have you tried another analog source ?
- is all your FCP updates installed? 7.03 was the latest
Regards

Vic

Hi Vic, thanks for you reply,

The camera is directly connected to the Matrox MXO2 Mini using it's composite output.
I am running Mac OSX Mountain Lion with the Matrox 2.6.1.0001 drivers.
I have tried other tapes as well, but the same problem occurs. I have tried different analog sources as well (component 720p hd and composite PAL 576i @ 50f/s) which both work fine.
My Final Cut Pro is indeed updated to the latest version (7.0.3)

Note that i AM able to play and record the Sony VCR's video output via a DVR, so it should not be the camera .

Kind Regards,

Alex

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the information.

Let's try the following:

- launch the MXO2's icon in system preferences, then go to the input tab - confirm it is set for composite
- on the physical MXO2 mini, confirm the out of the VCR goes to the in, to the green connector
- try a capture session using our Vetura capturing application, not FCP
- make sure it is set for the correct resolution PAL, which I think you have (under preferences when you launch Vetura)

What happens when you preview and when you attempt to capture/playback?

Regards

Vic

Hi vic, thanks for the quick response,

The input is indeed set to composite, with scaling disabled
The video output is indeed connected to the correct port on the Matrox as well, i wouldn't really get any video to preview if it wasn't either.
A similar problem occurs with the Vetura capture software, the image will preview for some time and then freeze up, clicking the record button will refresh the preview window and preview it for some time before it eventually goes black (because of recording), pressing the record button to stop capturing will again refresh the preview window before eventually freezing again

There are no options to set the resolution for PAL, as it is a standard video format

Kind regards,

Alex

Hi Alex,

If you refer to page 123 in the user manual, http://matrox.com/video/media/pdf/support/mac/mxo2/doc/en_Matrox_MXO2_Installation_and_User_Guide_2_6_1.pdf

You will see the location I was referring to.

Open Vetura is open, click Matrox Vetura Capture, make sure the video format matches what is coming in.

Regards
Vic

Hi Alex,

Strange. Please try the following and let us know the outcome:

- go to finder, applications and uninstall the MXO2 driver, make sure you put the checkmark when prompted to remove preferences, reboot
- download and run preference manager http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
- when you run it, click the trash icon
- re download the 2.6.1 driver with safari and install it, reboot
- try again with a brand new project using Vetura

Question, where are you located?

Regards

Vic

Hi Vic,

I went through all those steps as you said and the problem is still the same, the Vetura video preview freezes and will not refresh until the record button is clicked

I am located in Kortrijk - Belgium

Kind regards,
Alex

Hi Alex, please tell us about the Mac. Is this a desktop or laptop? How does the MXO2 connect to it?

Do you have another video source you could also try? For example, another video camera?

Regards

Vic

Hi Vic,

My desktop is a custom built Mac Pro Running OSX Mountain Lion with;
NVIDIA GTX 680
i3930k 3.2GHz Hexacore
16GB of DDR3 Ram
1x128GB SSD with the operating system and applications
1x2TB Seagate HDD as recording disk

The matrox itself is connected to the desktop via the Expresscard 34 adapter, where the desktop has a PCIe to Expresscard Adapter

I have tried a different composite source being a Playstation 1 which also outputs a PAL signal and that one works fine, which is strange

Kind Regards,
Alex

Alex that is one unique system Smile

I'm suspecting macrovision, in otherwords, copy-write is being triggered. Even if its material from your own camera.

Do you have another VCR model you can try with?

I was not familiar with macrovision, didn't even know it was a thing, the HDCP of the past Razz

Unfortunately i do not have a different VCR i could test with, but it's odd that a VHS recorder IS able to capture the VCR's output to a VHS casette

Kind regards,
Alex

Hello Alex,

Maybe we have a weak signal. A TBC, time base corrector may help.

Any other method you may have which would take the analog output, and go into another device, a camera for example, then the output of that goes into the MXO2's input?

Regards

Vic

Hi Vic,

I have a put video distribution amp in between to strengthen the signal, but that didn't help. I don't really have another camera to pass the source footage through.
I will try capturing on my Macbook Pro first, before i look into the TBC, as we both don't know if that will help.
I will keep you posted on how that goes Wink

Kind regards,
Alex
