|
|
I just upgraded to CS5.5 from CS5 hoping that would fix my problem but it did not. After Effects, in general, runs slowly when the Matrox plugin is in the plugins folder. Premiere seems to run okay but I'm an animator and spend most of my time in AE. I cannot play a RAM preview in real-time. It plays around 14 - 17 fps. The audio, when present, plays in real time (so, if I RAM preview 10 seconds, the audio will end at 10 seconds and the video will end about 10 seconds after that).
I have searched the forums and find a lot of issues out there but non about After Effects RAM preview (and general sluggishness).
I hope it's just a setting I'm missing or confused about.
My system and software versions:
Intel QX9650 (Quad 3.0 GHz)
8 GB RAM
Windows 7 64-bit
After Effects 10.5.0.253
Matrox Mtx.utils 6.1.0.99
MXO2 Mini MAX Firmware Primary Dev. 0.13.2
EEPROM Revision 0.3
PCI Bus Info X1 PCI Express 2.5 GHz
Current Temp: 49C
Output through HDMI.
I have not (re)run the HDMI Calibration Utility yet. I will do that once I get the real-time preview fixed. Otherwise, what's the point, right?
Thanks in advance for any advice given. |

Are you running the latest Windows and system updates for your motherboard model? What is your graphic card and are you running the latest drivers?
>>> Yes, I have the latest updates for Windows 7 and, I believe, the latest firmware updates for my motherboard.
>>> I recently purchased an EVGA GTX580 (couldn't afford the new 680). I downloaded and installed the newest drivers when I installed the card about two weeks ago.
What are your Composition settings and clip format used on the timeline?
Do you have any effects applied?
>>> The After Effects comp is HDTV 1080 (29.97). I have the WYSIWYG Output Project Format set to 1080i@29.97fps. I have lots of effects and various types of clips, pre-compositions, etc. However, correct me if I'm wrong, once these are loaded into RAM, it should not matter what makes up the composition, right?
Do you run AE Composition > Preview > RAM Preview?
What is the AE Preferences for RAM Preview options?
>>> Yes, sometimes I click the RAM Preview button in the Preview Pane and sometimes I hit Number Pad 0.
>>> Right now, I have the default viewer preferences:
>>> View Quality > Zoom Quality = Faster
>>> Color Management Quality: More Accurate Except RAM Preview
>>> I must say I just discovered the "Audio Preferences" Default Device but I can't seem to get it to stay on "Matrox ASIO Driver for Premiere Pro". When I click okay and then return to the preferences, it has been set back to After Effects WDM Sound.
>>> I have 8 GB RAM on my system and 6 GB reserved for After Effects, Premiere, Encore, and the Encoder.
>>> I do not have Multiprocessing turned on. I simply haven't messed with it since it came out and did not work well on my system back then.
Note: The performance of RAM previews performed with the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously preference selected may be decreased if antivirus software is running. |

Hi,
Do you have any other processes running which might slow down the system? ie anti-virus, screen saver etc..
Have you tried defragging your drives?
Have you tried enabling OpenGL setting in AE Preferences? To enable OpenGL for rendering previews, choose Edit > Preferences > Previews, and select Enable OpenGL. To also allow OpenGL to render at a lower resolution to maintain rendering speed while rendering complex compositions for previews, select Enable Adaptive Resolution With OpenGL.
Have you tried running without Matrox software installed? What is the difference you are seeing?
There are some other users who experience similar RAM preview sluggishness without Matrox software:

Here is a helpful Adobe link for improving performance with After Effects: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WSF13D6BED-C53B-408a-B2D6-C8B4205D4FB7a.html
Please let us know your findings. _________________ Regards,

When I remove the Matrox plugin from the After Effects Plugin folder, the RAM previews are both generated (rendered) faster and play faster (real-time) and the audio is in sync. It is only when the plugin is running that I experience the slower rendering and non real time playback. Does no one else have this problem?
Yes, I do have anti-virus running (eSet NOD32). I will disable and try again.
After Effects is running on one of two SSDs in my system. The footage and images are on an internal RAID 0+1.
OpenGL is enabled in the preferences but disabled in the preview pane.
At this point, I don't believe this is an issue with After Effects RAM preview preferences. After Effects performs normally without the Matrox plugin.
I think it has something more to do with my WYSIWYG settings or the version of the software I'm running. However, all the settings seem to be in order. The WYSIWYG output is set to HDTV 1080i @ 29.97 and so is my After Effects composition. This is going through the HDMI output. I have a different monitor with Component video input, I believe. I will attempt to output through that and let you know. However, that will not be an acceptable solution even if that plays in real time.
Any other suggestions? Based on my system specs, the version of Windows (7 64-bit) and Adobe CS 5.5, am I running the right version of Matrox software? |

Would it be possible to send us your AE composition? I can send you ftp information to your PM inbox. _________________ Regards,

I have uploaded the After Effects file.
New issue:
I was editing in Premiere CS5.5 tonight for the first time since I upgraded from CS5 and had the Matrox plugin installed. There is now a noticeable delay in the encoding process.
Ctrl +M
<wait 15 - 30 seconds>
Encoding options window appears
Click Render
<wait another 15 - 30 seconds>
Render starts.
I experienced this before in CS5 and, again, was hoping the upgrade to CS5.5 would fix it. It does not do this when I do not have the Matrox software installed. Is this a know bug or is there a way to fix it? |

Thanks for uploading the After Effects file. We will test it out and let you know our updates.
As for delays while encoding, please try the following Known Issues post mentioned here: http://forum.matrox.com/mxo/viewtopic.php?t=5352 _________________ Regards,

Hi dboanimation,
Have you been able to try without anti-virus running? After testing your composition, i did not notice a big time difference when comparing RAM preview render with and without Matrox plugin.
Also, when playing back the RAM preview, the realtime preview was averaged around 28 - 29 frames/second in AE window. Can you confirm your frames/second count displayed in AE (red font, top right hand corner)?
Have you tried enabling OpenGL in preview pane?
Please also note if you are experiencing a latency between WYSIWYG output and AE preview windows, this is normal behavior as also mentioned in this post reported by anther user: http://forum.matrox.com/mxo/viewtopic.php?t=8054
| Quote: | After further investigation and updates from engineering, the behavior you are seeing is normal.
Premiere preview and output is handled differently than WYSIWYG output through 3rd-party apps such as After Effects.
In Premiere, we handle both preview window and external output, therefore we can control the synchronization mechanism between both preview outputs.
As for After Effects external output which is processed through WYSIWYG, this does not run the same way. We do not control the preview outputs as done in Premiere, therefore, there is always a visible delay of a couple of frames through MXO2. |
Let us know your findings. _________________ Regards,
