The tech guys at Matrox are looking into this, but I'm hoping, in the meantime, another user has encountered this problem and has a solution or workaround.

I'm running Avid Media Composer 5.5.3 on Mac OS 10.6.8 with MXO2 Mini driver 2.5. It was 2.4 when I discovered this problem, but, in trying to resolve it, Joe at Matrox recommended I try the update. Actually, due to the problem at hand, I currently have the driver uninstalled and am not able to use the box.

Everything was working fine until I attempted to record some scratch narration. I have a USB microphone and the usual workflow is to plug it in, go to Capture Tool, Toggle Source off so the system isn't looking for a deck and choose the microphone from the Audio input pulldown. I should then be able to hit Capture and record the mic.

This is the way it works now that I have uninstalled the Matrox driver. But when I have the box working there are no pulldowns available for Audio or Video in the Capture Tool (I bolded that, not for emphasis, but because I took so long to spell out the specific issue), nor for that matter in the Audio Project settings. I understand that in MC 5.x Matrox is not an input device, but it shouldn't override input capabilities I have without it.

As a possible clue, I get this error message when I go into the Audio Project settings with the driver uninstalled, but the box still plugged in and I was getting it before unistalling the driver as well:

CoreAudioDevice::HasLevel( )
actualChannel [2] out of valid range.
[ Min: 0 ; Max: 1 ]

Any ideas or workarounds?

Hello Martin,

Thank you for summarizing the issue as others might find it helpful. Your tech support case is open (102571) and waiting internal feedback on this particular behavior. We will provide an update as soon as possible.

Joe,

In the meantime, can I use Vetura to capture audio from a USB microphone and then import that audio into Media Composer? That's not my preferred approach, but right now I'm not able to use my Mini at all as I need to capture audio too often to keep installing and uninstalling the driver.

I haven't heard back from Matrox Tech Support yet (it's only been a day), but for anyone else with this problem I thought I'd offer my ?hopefully temporary? workaround.

I just found an audio capture app (I'm using the free Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/), I record scratch narration through it and then import the files. Vetura Capture wasn't going to work for me as I have a USB mic and no USB inputs on my Matrox Mini.

Hopefully, I will soon, once again, be able to do this directly through Media Composer. In the meantime, this seems to do the trick.

Hey Joe,

Any results on this yet? It's been over a week.

Hi Martin,

Sorry for the delay; the issue has been tested internally and we can confirm the issue. We are now waiting for a solution from engineering in a future software release.

Hi. Yes actually we do have an update. There is nothing that can be done for Avid 5.5.3. However, as of Avid 6.0.3, Avid has provided a new HW/SW button near the right part of the timeline. The button toggles between Hardware (Matrox output) and software mode (no output through Matrox). When you switch to SW, you will see your USB device and be able to capture from it.

Great, thanks Joe. Does this apply to 6.5 as well?

We don't have a 6.5 driver yet so I haven't had a chance to look at it. But I imagine the function will remain there. We'll confirm once we get our new release for 6.5.

Sorry for missing your post.

I have seen one comment from a user running our latest Avid driver with MC 6.5. He mentions that there is some sluggishness and about a 1 frame delay between desktop playback and output monitoring. http://forum.matrox.com/mxo/viewtopic.php?p=35744&sid=b1f3e7b54e4dab10de9951dc9609732f

We don't support it or recommend it as we do not know what effect it can have on your system. If you wish to try it, you can do so at your own risk/discretion. If you can, it's best to wait until we release an official driver that supports Avid 6.5.
