I understand the codec agnostic nature of the MXO2, but what are the "real world" capabilities when connecting it to a MacBook Pro for field capture?

For example can a (recent) MBP capture ProRes HD 422 without dropping frames for some extended time? An external FireWire-800 harddisk/array should be fast enough, but will the 'load' on the Mac/CPU be able to handle this?

Also have you done any test with 3rd party codecs like Cineform, Sheer, etc. or utilities like Scopebox?

Thanks for answering my pesky questions here and on dvinfo.

Hi George,

Thank you for your interest in MXO2, with regards to your questions; With the current generation of MacBook Pro's it is not likely that you will be able to capture to ProRes at 1920x1080 29.97 fps without hardware assistance – You would need a quad-core to capture to that format. Matrox is currently investigating and working on solutions to provide MXO2 customers full raster captures with the MacBook Pro's. Please check our website or contact our Customer Care Department for any new updates regarding the MXO2.

As for your other question, we have not tested third-party codecs such as Cineform, Sheer nor utilities like Scopebox, therefore we can not really comment on their compatibility at this point in time.

Thanks,
B.C.

Thanks for the answers B.C.

The MXO2 certainly is an exciting product and I can wait a little while longer. No doubt there will be a flurry of reviews coming 'roud release time that will address at least some of my questions.

Is there any full raster 1080p24 capture codec that 2-core MBP's can handle using the MXO2?

Hello Guest

Thank you for your continual interest in the Matrox MXO2.

Matrox is presently in the process of doing ingest and output tests with the MXO2 and MBPs.
Therefore, we will have a more accurate picture of what codecs are supported on a MBP with the MXO2 at the time of the MXO2 release.

Have a great weekend
