We are currently using the Matrox Mini with Max in Premiere CS5.5 to edit the sequences we create in 3DS Max. The final encoding process is not close to real time, even in 720p. Here is our basic workflow, let me know if you find a flaw in it>

1. Generate JPG sequences from 3dS Max
2. Importing into Premiere and Exporting as Matrox AVI
3. Create new CS5.5 document using Matrox preset.
4. Editing the sequence (no transistions, no filters).
5. Exporting as Matrox MP4

If this sounds right, I can send further details.
