Hello,

Thank you for the input on this subject. Yes, there are different ways to achieve quality downconverting including working in AE. As mentioned, some of these quality tests experiments can be done without Matrox hardware.

Note the real benefits of working with the Matrox Axio LE: to accelerate your workflow process and take advantage of many accelerated features, such as transitions, 2D/3D filters, real-time downscaling/upscaling, output for compositing and graphic application, mixing all types of footage on an HD or SD timeline, accelerated DVD creation... and much more.

Do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions.
We look forward in hearing from you.

Kind regards,

JC

Hi,

I'm about to purchase our first Matrox Axio LE PCI-e + Adobe Premiere CS3 for our post-Pro.
Our current system for the NLE as below:-

DELL Precision T7400
- Dual Xeon QuadCore X5472 (2 x QuadCore 3GHz, 12MB Cache)
- 4GB DDR2 PC800 ECC FBD Quad Channel Mode
- Ati Radeon HD4870 512MB DDR5
- 160GB 15k SAS Raid-0 System Drive (80GB x 2) on Dell SAS 6/iR
Controller (LSI SAS 1068e)
System Drive divided in 2 partitions (C:\ 80GB OS & System Page Files and D:\ Temporary Premiere work files)
- 3TB SATA2 7.2k rpm Video Drive In Raid-0 (1.5TBx2 IMT)
- Built-in Firewire400 Rear/Front
- Windows Vista Business 32bit Sp1
- Dual 24" Dell Ultrasharp 1920 x 1200 LCD (Spanning mode 3840 x 1200)
- Sony LMD 2030W Broadcast Monitor
- Canon XH A1 DVCam/Canon HD HF11 FlashDrive Cam

Which PCI-e Slot should we install the AXIO LE Card and Ati HD4870 ? Below is the Slot location:-

From Memory and CPU node

Slot#1 - PCI-e 8X
Slot#2 - PCI-e 2.0 16X
Slot#3 - PCI
Slot#4 - PCI-e 2.0 16X
Slot#5 - PCI-X
Slot#6 - PCI-X
Slot#7 - PCI-X

We are doing on-going TV Programs in SD and HD rangging between 23 to 50 minutes duration.

I've read some of the article in the forum saying that Axio LE might have some problem doing long duration HD Editing (more than 15 minutes timeline). Regarding on our setup, do you thing we might face the same issue?

The problem isn't with Axio or really even the length of the program. The problem is that Premiere Pro has a hard time when projects get beyond a certain complexity. In my experience Axio improves the usability of PPro in this regard.

I have had 30-second TV spots that would make PPro crash every time you touched the keyboard. But I've cut two hour long (straight forward) shows and run them out to tape without any problems.

If you're the kind of editor or producer that needs to have 1500 clips in the bins in order to cut a 15 minute show then maybe Premiere isn't the right tool.

I just finished up a 30 minute 1080i (DVCPro HD) show for broadcast and had few crash and burn problems. (There were one or two or maybe three over a 5 day period) Project consisted of around 100 clips from the P2 cards representing maybe 90 minutes of original material, six or seven comps from After Effects, 20 or so full screen graphics (psd files), a bunch of music and VO tracks plus quite a few lower-thirds from the titler. I think there are two short transitions that require rendering - otherwise the whole show plays perfectly in real-time every time.

Thank you very much for the info Dafriend but I still have one more thing to clarify. Which slot of the Presicion T7400 should I install the Axio Le, 1st or 2nd or 4th slot?

A matrox dealer here suggested that we purchase the card with the system but then we already have 2 compatible systems in our post department. One is the Precision T5400 (1 x Xeon 5420 (Quad 2.5GHz) and the other is as below specification. I believed most will agreed that we use the T7400 as it is more powerful than the T5400. Only that I couldn't find the slot configuration for it. Can somebody help on this matter?

DELL Precision T7400
- Dual Xeon QuadCore X5472 (2 x QuadCore 3GHz, 12MB Cache)
- 4GB DDR2 PC800 ECC FBD Quad Channel Mode
- Ati Radeon HD4870 512MB DDR5
- 160GB 15k SAS Raid-0 System Drive (80GB x 2) on Dell SAS 6/iR
Controller (LSI SAS 1068e)
System Drive divided in 2 partitions (C:\ 80GB OS & System Page Files and D:\ Temporary Premiere work files)
- 3TB SATA2 7.2k rpm Video Drive In Raid-0 (1.5TBx2 IMT)
- Built-in Firewire400 Rear/Front
- Windows Vista Business 32bit Sp1
- Dual 24" Dell Ultrasharp 1920 x 1200 LCD (Spanning mode 3840 x 1200)
- Sony LMD 2030W Broadcast Monitor
- Canon XH A1 DVCam/Canon HD HF11 FlashDrive Cam

Which PCI-e Slot should we install the AXIO LE Card and Ati HD4870 ? Below is the Slot location:-

From Memory and CPU node

Slot#1 - PCI-e 8X
Slot#2 - PCI-e 2.0 16X
Slot#3 - PCI
Slot#4 - PCI-e 2.0 16X
Slot#5 - PCI-X
Slot#6 - PCI-X
Slot#7 - PCI-X

Thanks "dafriend" for your valuable input on this thread...
as for the rest of the questions in the above post; we recommend using slot number 2 in this specific configuration.

Thanks,
B.C.
